What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils come from plants. They are steam distilled from the roots, stems, leaves, needles, flowers...or cold pressed from the rind of citrus fruit. They are the aromatic properties of the plant; so when you smell a rose, a peppermint leaf or a pine tree, you are actually experiencing the essential oil of that plant.

The essential oil is what the plant uses to ward off predators, illness and heal from injury. They are a critical part of the plant's immune system. Since our physical makeup is based on the same carbon-based molecules, we can use these same powerful agents to support our bodies - protecting against environmental threats, soothing sore muscles, calming our emotions and so much more.

One essential oil can contain hundreds of different chemical compounds, which together create a unique balance and synergistic effect that allow us to use essential oils with rarely any side effects, when used responsibly.

How do I use them?

aromatically

AROMATICALLY

The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system is part of the brain that supports a variety of functions including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory. Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming.

Inhaling: straight from the bottle or place 1-2 drops of oil in your palms and rub together, cup your hands over your nose and inhale.

Diffusing: This is an excellent method for purifying the air, boosting your mood, or for immune and respiratory support. Just add a few drops of an essential oil to your diffuser with water - it's that easy.

topically

TOPICALLY

Topical use is amazing for localized issues as well as daily mood and immune support. When beginning topical use, dilute every oil with fractionated coconut oil. Over time if there are no sensitivities, you may choose to apply certain oils neat, although applying with FCO is always recommended for children and those with sensitive skin.

  • Mood Support: apply oil to pulse points (neck, wrists, over heart) or the base of the skull
  • Immune Support: apply oils to the bottoms of the feet or along the spine
  • Localized Issues: apply oil to affected area

internally

INTERNALLY

Disclaimer: We only recommend doTERRA essential oils for internal use. Essential oils must 100% pure, free of any impurities or adulterations.

Not all oils are meant for internal use. A good tip to remember when taking oils internally is to always look for the "Supplement Facts" on the label. There are many opinions on ingesting essential oils and it is important that you do your own research and use common sense (there's a lot of misinformation on the internet).

Common methods include:

  • placing a drop of oil under your tongue
  • putting oils in an empty veggie capsule
  • putting a drop in a glass of water

**Be sure the the container you’re drinking from is either glass, aluminum or ceramic as certain oils will deteriorate plastic.
